Jack bit at his fingernails, trying to figure out how to broach the subject with Master Oliver.

"Boy, what on earth is wrong?"

He jumped; he'd been so caught up in his own head. "I'..." He swallowed, took a breath and told himself to just say it.

Oliver watched him, head tilted. "Jack? Talk to me."

He took another breath and the words shot out of him. "I don't want to have the Christmas party this year."

"No? Why ever not?"

"I want it to be just us this year. No stress, no fuss, just you and me."

"All right, Jack. If that's what you desire."

He shook his head. "Not if it makes you unhappy, Master."

"Oh, my boy." His master opened his arms, offered him a warm smile. "You make me happy."

He flew into Oliver's arms, hugging him tight. "I love you, Master."

"As I love you, my dear love."

He tilted his head, begging a kiss. He knew some people might be disappointed, but he'd followed his heart, needing to have time with his master.

Needing to have time to breathe.
