Random Friday

Random Friday is random.
  • If I can get this edit done today, I have a minimal todo list for the weekend.
  • I'm making crescent rolls from a super easy recipe BA shared with me. I'm hoping they're yummy because I could totally have fun experimenting with various fillings for these.
  • not this weekend, but probably next, I think I'm going to take a hike in the Gatineaus. The fall colors are promising to be glorious - they already are beautiful, but there will be much more of them in another week or so.
  • I have a yen for a movie, but I don't want to go to the theatre - it feels like too much work
  • Cooler nights/mornings make my day, even if it's still getting to 22C (72F) during the day. The higher day temps will soon go the way of the dodo for this year at least and I will be a happy weather campre
  • I wonder if we'll have a rainy fall this year? It's been a pretty dry year, with not very much rain over the spring and summer at all.
  • the dog treats the blue jay like he does the squirrel - chases him out of the yard - the little birds that come to the feeder and the chipmunk that eats the seeds from the ground are totally okay to do so in his eyes, but that Jay - it and the squirrels totally get chased away
  • beginning to decorate the front of the house - the blow up dragon with the flapping wings goes up this weekend
  • I have all my chocolate bars and candies to give out, as well as the plastic halloween decorated baggies - I just need to put them all together. Maybe I'll do that before the 31st at 4pm this year... yes, I always buy early and somehow am never ready until after the first kids have arrived to trick or treat...
  • gonna by my pumpkins on the weekend too - they have 'warty' ones at the Farm Boy!
  • okay, that edit is not going to go through itself!
  • TGIF!

Halloweenpalooza - Day 7

Today's contest is for an ebook copy of water and air. Two fantasy tales.

To enter, leave a comment on this post before Saturday October 8, and I'll randomly draw a winner then. Leave your email if you can so I can get in touch with the winners easier, but if you'd prefer not, just make sure to check back on Saturday.

These two fantasy short stories explore the theme of loneliness ending. In Still Waters, Bry has been alone for decades with only his cats and the storms for company. While in The True Wind Cikor is a Traveler, flying far from the safety of the Clan Tree. When he returns, he's searching for the one meant to fly the skies at his side.

Throwback Thursday

This weekend in Thanksgiving in Canada (yes, I get two thanksgivings because I celebrate here and then go visit BA and Julia to celebrate it in the US, too!)

It's not quite as big a deal here as it is in the US, but it is very much a family thing. We do the big meal - sometimes Sunday, sometimes Monday, depending on your schedule.

When I was little (and we lived in Montreal) we used to come to Ottawa every year at Thanksgiving to visit my godparents. There would be geese honking in their Vs during the two and a half hour drive, along with all the fall colors in the leaves. There would be playing outside with my godparents' kids, who were just a touch younger than I was. Lots of good food. And eventually there was also the Atari -- my first introduction to video games was in my godparents' basement.

Some years we even got to go for a fly in my godfather's Cessna!

I can remember that it was always a good time. We always felt welcome and were treated like kings. I got to drink soda with my meals, and there would be treats like chips every evening. It would only be for not even three full days - we'd drive up Sunday morning and drive home at some point on Monday, but these trips were always highly anticipated.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, no matter where you are!

Jeff and his friends go to the park to summon a pleasure demon on Halloween night. It’s supposed to be a joke, a lark. A dare. They follow the instructions from the book they found, but suddenly everything changes and something very real comes out. Or does it? When the encounter is over, Jeff discovers that his friends have had a very different experience from his own.

Inside Out Pumpkin Muffins

I was asked to share the recipe for the Inside Out Pumpkin Muffins I baked earlier today. This recipe is from King Arthur Flour and can be found here.

They're actually pretty easy to make, they just take a little more time than your average muffin/cupcake because there's three different things to mix, and then four steps to fill the muffin tin. They aren't very sweet - just enough - and the oats in the streusel topping ads a nice nutty note.

Ingredients

TOPPING
1/2 cup King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour or King Arthur White Whole Wheat Flour
1/4 cup brown sugar (packed), light or dark
1/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats or quick oats (not instant)
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons butter, at firm room temperature

FILLING
1 cup (8-ounce package) cream cheese, at room temperature; low-fat is fine
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract or a few drops Fiori di Sicilia flavoring, optional

MUFFINS
1 cup pumpkin purée (about half a standard 15-ounce can)
2 large eggs
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 cup boiled cider (for best flavor), dark corn syrup, or honey
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice; or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon + 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves + 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/3 cup milk
1 1/2 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour or King Arthur White Whole Wheat Flour

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a standard 12-cup muffin pan with muffin papers, and grease the papers. (I did not grease the papers and I have to admit, they do stick a lot to the papers).

To make the streusel: Whisk together the flour, sugar, oats, and salt. Work in the butter, mixing until coarse crumbs form. Set the topping aside.

To make the filling: Make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature. If it's not, place it in a microwave-safe bowl, and heat on low power for 40 seconds, just to soften it. Stir in the sugar and vanilla or Fiori di Sicilia, if using.

To make the batter: Whisk together the pumpkin, eggs, brown sugar, oil, boiled cider, salt, spices, baking powder, baking soda, and milk. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl. (I used honey in mine instead of the boiled cider as that is not a ready to hand ingredient)

Add the flour and mix until well combined. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl and beat briefly to incorporate the scrapings.

To assemble muffins: Drop a scant 2 tablespoons of the batter (a heaping tablespoon cookie scoop works well here) into each muffin cup, spreading it to cover the bottom. Dollop on a heaping tablespoon of filling, then cover with another 2 tablespoons of batter.

Sprinkle each muffin with some of the streusel topping.

Bake the muffins for 18 to 20 minutes, until a cake tester inserted towards the edge (not into the filling) comes out crumb-free. Remove the muffins from the oven. As soon as they're cool enough to safely handle, transfer them to a rack to cool completely.

Enjoy fresh-baked muffins within 2 to 3 hours; refrigerate up to 3 days for longer storage. Freeze, well-wrapped, up to 3 weeks. Rewarm cold muffins in a preheated 350°F oven, tented with foil. Or heat briefly in a microwave set at low power.

Wednesday Book Day

I've got two books to talk about this week, both of them reprints. One is an early download from Pride Publishing, the other is a self-pub. The second one is even Halloween themed.

Love in G Minor hasn't been available for quite a while and I'm very happy to have it out once again! While this is a couple bringing in a third like Three of a Kind, it is nonetheless a very different story. It's fun exploring that dynamic in varied ways.

Sometimes a third is exactly what a pair needs.

Stephen and Jack play a lot. These long-time lovers are constantly testing boundaries, fighting a delicious battle for control. When they meet young waiter Benji, they’re both intrigued. Such innocence doesn’t come along often and they decide Benji is the best thing on the menu.

Benji feels like he’s in over his head with this sophisticated pair, but it might be Stephen’s musical and artistic temperament that makes three a crowd. Can Jack and Stephen hit just the right note? Or will Benji end up out in the cold?

The Law of the Jungle was written a while ago - it was in the Fur and Fang anthology. I do love a black Jaguar with green eyes, the black just makes the green so much more.

Captain Marco is delighted with his crew's gift of a big, emerald-eyed cat. He's astounded and even more happy when he finds that the cat is also beautiful as Abrigio - a man. For his part, Abrigio is used to being caged and abused and trust is not easily given. But will danger end any chance of a relationship between these two men before it can even begin?
